Job Description and Duties

Positions at the Water Boards may be eligible for telework with in-person attendance based on the operational needs of the position and might be expected to comply with Executive Order (EO) 22-25 after July 1, 2026.

Salary Information - CalHR salary rules allow appointment at the entrance rate (Cal. Code Regs., tit. 2, § 599.673) of a classification. For classes with alternate ranges, placement is based on education/experience. Employees appointed to the Attorney or Water Resource Control Engineer classification will receive Recruitment Higher Above Minimum (HAM) rate in accordance with the approved Civil Service Pay Scales.

Please note: this position is paid on an hourly basis and limited to 1500 hours per calendar year.  The salary range for Scientific Aid is $18.26 - $21.67 per hour.

The Central Valley Regional Water Quality Control Board has an opening for a Scientific Aid in the Surface Water Ambient Monitoring Program/Title 27 Unit. The position is located at 1685 E Street, Fresno, CA, 93706.

Duties include assisting in the preparation of water quality scientific research projects; assisting in the development of various routine scientific reports, memos, permits, and formal and informal enforcement documents; participating in water quality site inspections and field sampling; assisting in analyzing laboratory samples. This job includes hiking and carrying equipment to sampling locations in various weather conditions. Please review the duty statement for additional information.

Statement of Qualifications (SOQ)

A Statement of Qualifications (SOQ) must be submitted along with the State Application and serves as documentation of candidate’s ability to present information clearly and concisely in writing. It should be typed, no more than two (2) pages in length, using Arial, size 12 font, and normal margins.

The SOQ should address the following:

  • Experience reviewing scientific reports/technical documents.
  • Experience reviewing data.
  • Experience with lab sampling.
  • Proficiency with standard office computer software (e.g., Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook).
  • Experience with database entry and spreadsheets.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills.
