Job Description and Duties

Please note: this position is paid on an hourly basis and limited to 1500 hours in a rolling year. The salary range for Scientific Aid is $18.26 - $21.67 per hour.

The State Water Resources Control Board, Division of Drinking Water, Monterey District has an opening for a Scientific Aid located at 1 Lower Ragsdale Dr., Building 1, Suite 120, Monterey, CA 93940. The Monterey District regulates over 120 public water systems in Monterey, Santa Cruz, and San Benito Counties. This is a hybrid, in-person, and telework position.

Duties:

Under the direct supervision of the Monterey District Engineer, the incumbent is expected to be courteous and provide timely responses to internal/external customers, follow through on commitments, and to solicit and consider internal/external customer input when completing work assignments.

 

  • Assist in the collection, analysis, interpretation, and processing of water quality monitoring and other data from public water systems to determine compliance with drinking water standards and monitoring and reporting requirements. Process incoming documentation and correspondence. Maintain databases and spreadsheets. Track reports and compliance due dates and notify staff and water systems of need for follow-up action to ensure public water systems comply with directives from the Division of Drinking Water. Generate and update monitoring schedules, send water quality correspondence to staff and water systems, query reports, assist in investigations, and prepare reports and other documents for staff review.
  • Assist staff with the preparation of drinking water system permits, inspections, enforcement actions, and other correspondence, which also includes document review, field water quality testing, notes, and photographs. Assist staff in preparing reports, correspondence, and follow up documents. Field work may require the incumbent to be able to navigate uneven terrain and be outdoors for extended periods of time during a working day.
  • Assist with various administrative tasks including processing and sending mail, document accessibility conversion and checks, filing, scanning, and organizing archived documents, answering phones, organizing files, gathering documents for record requests, and related tasks.
  • Provide oversight of the Monterey District’s small onsite laboratory, which includes equipment for analyzing total coliform and E. coli, chlorine residual, turbidity, pH, and nitrification parameters. Assist with calibrating and maintaining water quality monitoring equipment. Maintain lab records, inventory, organization, and cleanliness.

Salary Information - CalHR salary rules allow appointment at the entrance rate (Cal. Code Regs., tit. 2, § 599.673) of a classification. For classes with alternate ranges, placement is based on education/experience. Employees appointed to the Attorney or Water Resource Control Engineer classification will receive Recruitment Higher Above Minimum (HAM) rate in accordance with the approved Civil Service Pay Scales.

 

In addition, note: Effective July 1, 2025, the State of California implemented the Personal Leave Program 2025 (PLP 2025) which reduces an employee’s monthly salary in exchange for leave credits. Employees appointed to this classification will have their monthly salary reduced and will accrue hours of PLP 2025 on the first day of each pay period in accordance with the applicable bargaining contract. The salary range(s) included on this job posting do not reflect the reduction in pay.
