SENIOR ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENTIST (SPECIALIST) – CULTURAL RESOURCES DIVISION / CORE TECHNICAL TEAM / HQ, SACRAMENTO


Join California State Parks’ NEW Coastal Resilience Team! The reporting location for this position is Headquarters in Sacramento, CA. This position will work under the direction of the Supervisor, Cultural Resource Programs.

California State Parks is launching a new Coastal Resilience Team to help advance sea level rise adaptation and improve coastal resilience across the coastal parks of the California State Park System. This team of specialists will work together to inform coastal adaptation projects; integrate climate principles into Department policies, operations, and programs; and provide technical support to coastal parks.

Each member of this team will bring unique expertise, working together to integrate resilience principles across all aspects of coastal park management.

In this role you will:

  • Support the development of department-wide policy and guidance to address coastal hazards in preservation planning and adaption strategies.
  • Provide scientific and technical support for environmental and/or historic preservation compliance, permitting, and interagency coordination.
  • Conduct site visits, evaluate adaptation strategies using site data and climate projections to formulate interdisciplinary projects.
  • Develop and manage datasets, technical tools, and planning resources.

We’re looking for candidates who:

  • Bring strong expertise in environmental review and permitting as it applies to the built environment and cultural resource management in general.
  • Have experience developing scopes of work that address the adaptation or resilience of historic buildings, landscapes and archaeological sites.
  • Are skilled in working with large data sets and conducting data analysis
  • Demonstrate strong teamwork skills and a willingness to collaborate.

Training and Development Assignments may be considered.

This position is designated as Telework Eligible - Remote Centered.

Working Conditions

Duties are performed in both office and field settings. Fieldwork may require long-distance travel by vehicle to remote park units and accessing field sites by foot, including in undeveloped or wilderness areas. The incumbent must be able to navigate uneven terrain, withstand exposure to variable weather conditions, and work in physically demanding environments. Travel throughout the State and occasionally irregular work hours, as needed.

Effective July 1, 2025, the California Department of Human Resources (CalHR) implemented the Personal Leave Program 2025 (PLP 2025).  PLP 2025 directs that each employee receives a temporary reduction in pay in exchange for PLP 2025 leave credits. The percentage of the temporary salary reduction and the number of PLP 2025 leave credits are determined by the position’s assigned bargaining unit.
