Job Description and Duties

FORESTRY AIDE – NORTH COAST REDWOODS DISTRICT

“Priority consideration will be given to any person receiving State public assistance under the CalWORKs program. Applicants who receive State public assistance need to identify their status as a CalWORKs recipient in the comments area on the application. Applicants must submit a verification of their CalWORKs eligibility status, which may include the most recent Notice of Action showing TANF eligibility or a copy of your last aid check stub. If verification is not submitted with the application, the application will not be processed. (Applicants may obtain verification from the CalWORKs program).”

The North Coast Redwoods District will be hiring a Forestry Aide to assist with a variety of projects, primarily involving forest restoration and prescribed fire. The reporting location will be Del Norte Coast Redwoods State Park. Duties will necessitate travel throughout the District. This position will work under the supervision of the Forester II.

The positions, working under supervision and independently, will support the District Resource Management Program by assisting with the implementation of resource restoration projects including but not limited to forest restoration, prescribed fire, botanical surveys, invasive plant control, fish and wildlife surveys and habitat restoration. Forest Restoration and Prescribed Fire Duties – Participate in all aspects of forest restoration including survey and mark stands for treatments, thin forests, plant trees, oversee contractors, set up monitoring plots, analyze data and assist with nursery operations. Thinning project objectives include: increasing resource availability for remaining trees, reducing fuel loading, or releasing deciduous oaks from conifer encroachment. The position will also prep units and implement prescribed fires in various habitats throughout the District.

Vegetation Management Duties - Conduct habitat restoration projects involving the monitoring and removal of non-native plants using a variety of treatment methods and working with volunteers, California Conservation Corps, Cal Fire, contractors and other work crews. Remove vegetation for fuel reduction and forest resilience and assist with grassland restoration. Prepare areas and implement prescribed fires in a variety of habitats.

This position may work up to 1500 hours within 12 consecutive months. This position is designated as not telework eligible.

The selected candidate is required to submit to a background investigation process utilizing Live Scan fingerprinting prior to appointment.

Desirable Qualifications

In addition to evaluating each candidate's relative ability, as demonstrated by quality and breadth of experience, the following factors will provide the basis for competitively evaluating each candidate:

Work well as an individual and in a multi-disciplinary team setting. Be flexible and open-minded and be able to work under harsh environmental conditions (wind, rain, sun exposure, dense vegetation, very steep slopes, and day and night shifts). Familiarity with the use of hand tools such as shovels, Pulaski’s, and weed eaters. Chainsaw experience is preferred but training will be made available. Applicant should be able to identify flora and fauna of northern California. Applicant must have excellent field orientation skills and basic familiarity with electronic data collection (Collector/Avenza/ArcMap). May be required to camp out up to 3 nights per week and work on weekends. Individual will need to operate 4-wheel drive trucks, ATVs and UTVs (ATV/UTV certified preferred).
