Under the supervision of the Fish and Wildlife Habitat Supervisor II, the incumbent will be part of a short-term regionwide “Strike Team” under the North Central Region Invasive Weeds Strike Team Grant to locate, map, prioritize locations for control, and remove invasive species through mechanical, hand, and herbicide applications; to begin the reestablishment of native vegetation to the benefit of pollinators and other wildlife species. The duties of this position are directly tied to the North Central Region Invasive Weeds Strike Team Grant that is funded for 24 months; these duties will end when the pilot ends.
Remove/eradicate invasive plant and weed species around buildings, structures, roads, trails, ditches, ponds and fields on Department lands. Follow the Departments Wildlands Integrated Pest Management practices, which include spraying of herbicides while wearing proper personal protective equipment using vehicle mounted sprayer (truck, ATV, and tractor), pull behind sprayer, and backpack sprayers, pulling weeds and plants in sensitive areas using hand tools, mechanical removal using farm equipment and implements. Complete post removal paperwork and record keeping. Provide routine and preventative maintenance on project equipment, tools, and vehicles.
The incumbent facilitates the day-to-day operations and maintenance of areas within the North Central Region Conservation Lands Program and assists with habitat improvements on a total of over 100,000 acres of Wildlife Areas, Ecological Reserves, and other (undesignated) areas. Incumbent will also manage excessive vegetation and maintain wildlife-friendly fences and gates. Will be required to operate and maintain vehicles, tractors, and equipment/tools needed to complete tasks in a natural environment. Assist in conducting wildlife surveys, including endangered species surveys. Incumbent may lead one or more seasonal/scientific aids on field projects.

This position is a 12-month Limited Term (LT) and may be extended up to 24 months or become permanent. During this 12-month Limited Term assignment, you will receive full health, dental, and vision benefits! You will also earn State Service and accrue monthly leave credits.

This position is field based and will be expected to work outdoors in adverse weather conditions, in extreme temperatures, walk or wade on uneven, muddy, or unstable terrain, be prepared to encounter mosquitoes, ticks, stinging/biting insects, rattlesnakes and other wildlife. Apply herbicides/pesticides while wearing full PPE over uneven terrain in multiple types of habitats including hills, fields, ponds and marshes, and safely operate hand and power tools for vegetation management and removal on department owned lands. Work hours may vary and may be required to work holidays, weekends and/or unusual hours. Will be required to travel to work sites up to 40% of the time which will include occasional overnight stay. Work activities will include repetitive lifting and other physically challenging duties. Incumbent must possess and maintain a valid California Driver’s License. Will be required to operate and maintain vehicles, tractors, and equipment/tools needed to complete tasks in a natural environment. This position requires the incumbent to wear a CDFW uniform on certain occasions consistent with Department policy.
This position will report to Gray Lodge Wildlife Area in Gridley, CA and work will be performed in Butte, Sutter, Yuba, and Glenn Counties. State housing is not available.
