Job Description and Duties

Are you passionate about improving program performance and supporting counties in delivering timely and accurate benefits to Californians in need? The CalFresh Operations Bureau is seeking a dynamic and results-driven leader to serve as a Corrective Action Supervisor (Supervisor I) in the Corrective Action Unit. This is an exciting opportunity to make a measurable impact on the effectiveness of California’s largest nutrition assistance program while working collaboratively with a dedicated and mission-focused team.

The Corrective Action Supervisor plays a key role in strengthening county performance and supporting statewide efforts to reduce the CalFresh Payment Error Rate (PER) and improve Application and Recertification Processing Timeliness (APT/RPT). Under the general direction of the County Technical Assistance Section B Chief, the Corrective Action Supervisor (Supervisor I) oversees the daily operations of the Corrective Action Unit and provides direct supervision to a team of Analysts I/II. The incumbent ensures that corrective action strategies are well-coordinated, data-driven, and effectively implemented in partnership with County Welfare Departments (CWDs) and internal program divisions.

50% travel is required.

This is a 12-month limited term position and may be extended to a maximum of 24-months and/or may become permanent based on operational needs.

Working Conditions

This position is eligible for hybrid work in accordance with the Governor’s Executive Order N-22-25 and at the sole discretion of the Department of Social Services under California Government Code Section 14200. All telework schedules are subject to change and may be re-evaluated at any time. The incumbent will be expected to report for in office work and attend work related in-person events as deemed operationally necessary. Telework does not change the terms and conditions of employment, the essential functions of job duties, or required compliance with the CDSS policies. 

Please note: Regular commute is not compensable. 

For positions advertised in more than one location, headquarter location may be designated on the selected candidate's primary residence location, and/or the closest CDSS location in accordance with operational need and available space. The successful candidate must reside in California upon appointment.

The CalFresh Branch oversees the administration of CalFresh, California's version of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), and the California Food Assistance Program (CFAP) with the mission of ensuring that all eligible Californians have access to the food benefits available to them and that the Branch supports the provision of excellent customer service while upholding program integrity. The CalFresh Branch is comprised of the Policy Bureau, Operations Bureau, and Technical Assistance Bureau.  

CalFresh is federally mandated, and in California, is state-supervised and county-operated.  The Branch also oversees the administration of Disaster CalFresh, as needed, and several state-funded food benefit initiatives. CalFresh is the largest food program in California and provides an essential hunger safety net.

  • Proven ability to lead, motivate, and develop staff to achieve unit and organizational goals. Experience providing constructive feedback, managing workloads, and fostering a positive and inclusive work environment.
  • Strong ability to interpret and analyze data, identify trends, and translate complex information into clear, actionable recommendations. Experience using data to inform decision-making and improve operational performance.
  • Understanding of CalFresh or similar public assistance programs, including policies, processes, and performance measures related to timeliness, accuracy, and payment error rate (PER).
  • Experience participating in or supporting corrective action, quality control, or performance improvement initiatives at the state or county level. Familiarity with root cause analysis and continuous improvement principles.
  • Demonstrated ability to build and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external partners, including County Welfare Departments, state program divisions, and federal representatives.
  • Excellent communication skills, including the ability to write clearly and concisely, prepare reports and presentations, and effectively convey complex information to diverse audiences.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail. Ability to balance multiple assignments, meet deadlines, and adapt to changing priorities while maintaining high-quality deliverables.
  • Demonstrates initiative, creativity, and adaptability in identifying and implementing solutions to improve program operations and service delivery.
  • Maintains professionalism, integrity, and tact in sensitive or high-pressure situations. Exercises sound judgment and discretion in managing information and making recommendations.
