Job Description and Duties

Do you want to be part of a team of highly motivated, multi-disciplinary scientists tasked with implementing a statewide monitoring framework? Are you an expert in acoustic monitoring and data science, a proponent of collaboration, and interested in bridging the gap between traditional management approaches and new technologies? If yes, then this is the position for you! The Office of Cannabis is looking for a Senior Environmental Scientist (Specialist) to join our team of dedicated wildlife professionals. You will lead the processing and management of our acoustic data, implement automated approaches for aggregating and summarizing wildlife data, carry out advanced quantitative analyses that integrate multiple data sources, and develop innovative approaches for addressing some of our current information gaps. This position has a broad diversity of tasks, all of which help ensure CDFW is able to make science-driven management decisions!

Working Conditions

This position includes field work some weeks between April and August. This includes staying at hotels away from home 3 nights per week. Must safely perform field work, which may require operating a 4WD vehicle, wearing a uniform, wading through streams, carrying heavy equipment over uneven terrain, and working extended or irregular hours in inclement weather. When not in the field, this position is eligible for telework (two office days; three work from home days) based on the department's current telework policy. Must be able to conduct office work involving use of a computer keyboard for several hours a day, usually sitting, but may involve walking or standing for brief periods of time.

Desirable Qualifications

In addition to evaluating each candidate's relative ability, as demonstrated by quality and breadth of experience, the following factors will provide the basis for competitively evaluating each candidate:
- Ability to identify California bird species by sound
- Experience designing or leading the implementation of a scientific study or monitoring framework.
- Experience writing and contributing analyses to scientific publications or technical reports.
- Experience with data management, R statistical software, MS office applications (Access, Excel, etc) and other web- or subscription-based software applications (e.g. ArcPro, Google Earth).
- Experience coordinating and communicating with a broad range of stakeholders including government agencies, universities, non-profit organizations, and the public.
- Experience with statistical approaches used in wildlife ecology.
