The mission of the California State Library is to empower the people of the nation's most diverse and populous state by:
Providing credible information services to all Californians, especially those in state government and the Legislature, libraries, academia, and persons with disabilities; Leading and establishing partnerships with California libraries through funding, program development, and support; Preserving and providing access to California’s unique history to enrich the lives of current and future generations.
The California State Library serves the people of California in several ways and is made up of the Administrative Services Bureau, the California Research Bureau, State Library Services, the Information Technology Bureau and Library Development Services.
These bureaus ensure that the California State Library is the central reference and research library for state government and the Legislature and provides non-partisan research to the Legislature and the Governor. The California State Library collects, preserves, generates and disseminates information ranging from California's priceless historical items to today's online texts, and it advises, consults with, and provides technical assistance to California's public libraries, all while directing state and federal funds to support local public libraries and statewide library programs, and services.
The State Library is home to public reading rooms including Information Services, Government Publications, the Law Library, the Braille and Talking Book Library, and the California History Room. It also plays host to Night at the State Library, annual community events like Juneteenth, the Archives Crawl, Museum Day and exhibits you won’t find anywhere else!
The Braille and Talking Book Library (BTBL) is a free service which cooperates with the Library of Congress, National Library Service for the Blind and Physically Handicapped (NLS) to serve residents of Northern California who are unable to read conventional print due to a visual, physical, or organic reading disability (such as dyslexia). Talking (audio) and braille books and magazines, downloadable books and magazines via desktop or mobile app, descriptive videos, and audio playback equipment are available for loan to eligible patrons. The BTBL collection of recreational fiction and nonfiction materials reflects a public library’s collection intended for Northern Californians with print disabilities. In addition to circulating braille and audio items via mail and online, BTBL provides reader advisors and reference services.
