The State Water Resources Control Board’s Division of Financial Assistance has an opening for a Senior Engineering Geologist in the Cleanup Fund Branch. The position is located at 801 K Street, Sacramento, CA 95814, right in the heart of Downtown close to light rail stations, other public transportation, awesome restaurants, and more.
Duties: Under the direction of the Supervising Engineering Geologist and consistent with good customer service practices and the goals of the State and Regional Board’s Strategic Plan, the Senior Engineering Geologist is expected to be courteous and provide timely responses to internal/external customers, follow through on commitments, and to solicit and consider internal/external customer input when completing work assignments. The Senior Engineering Geologist is responsible for the supervision and direction of technical staff that perform engineering, geological, and hydrogeological reviews of data related to an existing or threatened surface or groundwater contamination, regulatory cases, and implementation of the Site Cleanup Subaccount Program (SCAP) in accordance with Section 25299.50.6 of the Health and Safety Code. The Senior Engineering Geologist works within the technical sections which support Cleanup Fund programs by performing engineering, geological, and hydrogeological reviews of data related to groundwater contamination. This position requires interaction with internal and external stakeholders, training staff and maintaining staff productivity. Specific duties include the following: Supervises and directs technical staff performing reviews of hydrogeological and engineering data. The Senior Engineering Geologist manages staff in a fast-paced, productive, and cooperative environment as they perform review and analysis of complex technical documents and information related to planning, management, and implementation of water quality protection and contaminated site cleanup projects. The Senior Engineering Geologist is responsible for providing timely and professional assistance to the public, stakeholders, internal staff, and external agencies by various methods of communication.

Positions at the Water Boards may be eligible for telework with in-person attendance based on the operational needs of the position and might be expected to comply with Executive Order (EO) 22-25 after July 1, 2026.
In accordance with the Statewide Telework Policy and GC 14200, the successful candidate must reside in California upon appointment. Proof of residency may be required.
Salary Information - CalHR salary rules allow appointment at the entrance rate (Cal. Code Regs., tit. 2, § 599.673) of a classification. For classes with alternate ranges, placement is based on education/experience. Employees appointed to the Attorney or Water Resource Control Engineer classification will receive Recruitment Higher Above Minimum (HAM) rate in accordance with the approved Civil Service Pay Scales.
In addition, note: Effective July 1, 2025, the State of California implemented the Personal Leave Program 2025 (PLP 2025) which reduces an employee’s monthly salary in exchange for leave credits. Employees appointed to this classification will have their monthly salary reduced and will accrue hours of PLP 2025 on the first day of each pay period in accordance with the applicable bargaining contract. The salary range(s) included on this job posting do not reflect the reduction in pay.
