Job Description and Duties

The California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) is seeking a highly independent, technically skilled professional to serve as the Statewide Hatchery Coordination, a role that blends science, strategy, and stewardship. In this position, you’ll guide operations across 22 state hatcheries, help develop statewide policy and technical guidance, and drive improvements in fish husbandry, genetics, hatchery technology, and stocking practices. You will collaborate with Fisheries Branch leadership, regional biologists, hatchery staff, and partner agencies to implement strategic plans, evaluate research proposals, solve operational challenges, and advance the science that supports California’s hatcheries and recreational fisheries.

This role is ideal for someone who thrives at the intersection of scientific expertise, program management, and public service. You will lead statewide technical support, ensure compliance with environmental and species-protection laws, oversee hatchery data systems, coordinate critical outreach, and represent CDFW in high-visibility forums.

This position may be eligible for a telework opportunity in accordance with departmental policies and operational needs. Beginning July 1, 2026, employees will be required to work in-person at least four (4) days per week in alignment with Executive Order N-22-25. Additional in-office days may be required based on operational needs.

Working Conditions

• Position is primarily focused on data analyses and management, both of which often require sitting for long periods of time and maintaining a high level of attention to detail. Work several hours in an office setting (both standing and sitting). Work several hours on a computer.
• Typical working hours are 8:00 AM-5:00 PM Mon-Fri. Occasional fieldwork and time sensitive projects may require travel outside of normal business hours.
• Occasional travel (up to 10%), including some overnight or multi day travel operating Department vehicles to remote locations when working with hatcheries, in the field, or to present at conferences or workshops.
• Possession of a valid State Driver’s License is required.
• Telework available in compliance with Department policies.

Ability to coordinate diverse teams to develop complex plans on a timeline to meet departmental needs. Ability to apply or modify scientific and environmental methods and principles related to anadromous salmonid hatcheries practices and salmon management objectives from the Central Valley Project Improvement Act, Constant Fractional Marking/Tagging Program and Pacific Fishery Management Council Salmon Management Plan. Ability to generate and provide written technical reports summarizing goals, methods, results, and recommendations consistent with scientific based studies. Use of spreadsheet, database, statistical software, file sharing programs, and MS Power BI to create, compile, analyze, and present data and analyses for use in reports, presentations, departmental webpages, and other tracking and information sharing settings.
