Job Description and Duties

This position is limited term 12 months; may be extended up to 24 months or become permanent.

This advertisement is for a Chief Engineer I (Correctional Facility) position located at the Southern Camp Warehouse in Ontario, San Bernardino County. Please indicate the position number on your application: 099-216-6699-002.

Under the general direction of the Correctional Plant Supervisor (CPS), DOC the Chief Engineer I (CE I), CF – Southern Camps, directly supervises five Stationary Engineers (SE). The primary area of responsibility includes fire camps from Central to Southern California. Assist in the operation, maintenance and repair of the camps, and equipment at the camps as well; the preventative maintenance (PM) and repairs to heating/ventilation/air-conditioning (HVAC) systems, and the repair and maintenance of food storage and preparation equipment.

The duties include, but are not limited to, planning, organizing, and directing the work activities of the SE in all aspects of the repairs, maintenance, and PM of HVAC and minor electrical distribution. This position is responsible for the research, initiation, and technical aspects of major/minor Capital Outlay Projects, Special Repairs, and Section 6.00 project submittals.

Individuals who are eligible for a Training and Development assignment may also be considered for this position(s).

Effective July 1, 2025, the Personal Leave Program 2025 (PLP 2025) was implemented. PLP 2025 requires that each full-time employee receive a 3 percent reduction in pay in exchange for 5 hours of PLP 2025 leave credits monthly through June 30, 2027. Salaries do not reflect the recent changes.

Working Conditions

About this location -- The primary mission of SCC is to provide housing, programs and services for minimum and medium custody incarcerated individuals, to aid in their rehabilitation. SCC is responsible for the training and placement of male incarcerated individuals in the Conservation Camp Program. SCC administers male camps located throughout California.
