The Lahontan Regional Water Quality Control Board has an opening for an Engineering Geologist. The position is located at 15095 Amargosa Rd., Bldg. 2 Suite 210, Victorville, CA 92394.

The Lahontan Region encompasses many scenic vistas from the highest (Mount Whitney) and lowest (Death Valley) points in the contiguous US and diverse topography throughout. There are two Outstanding National Resource Waters, Lake Tahoe and Mono Lake, located in the Lahontan Region. Our employees are encouraged to enjoy all that the region has to offer in outdoor recreation, such as hiking, skiing, swimming, boating, fishing, rock hounding (gem, mineral, and fossil collecting), and camping to name a few!

Working Conditions

Positions at the Water Boards may be eligible for telework with in-person attendance based on the operational needs of the position.

In accordance with the Statewide Telework Policy and GC 14200, the successful candidate must reside in California upon appointment.  Proof of residency may be required.

Salary Information - CalHR salary rules allow appointment at the entrance rate (Cal. Code Regs., tit. 2, § 599.673) of a classification. For classes with alternate ranges, placement is based on education/experience. Employees appointed to the Attorney or Water Resource Control Engineer classification will receive Recruitment Higher Above Minimum (HAM) rate in accordance with the approved Civil Service Pay Scales.

In addition, note: Effective July 1, 2025, the State of California implemented the Personal Leave Program 2025 (PLP 2025) which reduces an employee’s monthly salary in exchange for leave credits. Employees appointed to this classification will have their monthly salary reduced and will accrue hours of PLP 2025 on the first day of each pay period in accordance with the applicable bargaining contract. The salary range(s) included on this job posting do not reflect the reduction in pay.

Desirable Qualifications

In addition to evaluating each candidate's relative ability, as demonstrated by quality and breadth of experience, the following factors will provide the basis for competitively evaluating each candidate:
  1. Knowledge of or experience with how geologic principles can be applied to water quality regulation, protection, and restoration.
  2. Experience with determining threats to water quality from anthropogenic materials or substances, environmental screening levels or criteria, risk assessment, contaminant transport, site characterization, and/or site cleanup.
  3. Experience in and/or knowledge of Water Board related regulatory programs and/or environmental regulations.
  4. Experience with GIS including the development of maps, interpretation of images, utilization of aerial photography for identification of specific activities or disturbances.
  5. Experience with effective verbal and written communication skills.
  6. Experience presenting to small and large audiences.
  7. Customer service skills.
  8. Ability to work effectively and collaboratively with team members, law enforcement, stakeholders, local and state agencies, and members of the public.
  9. Experience with Microsoft Office programs (e.g., SharePoint, Word, Excel, PowerPoint), ArcGIS software, data analysis software, and databases.
  10. Ability to perform site inspections and other field work, including overnight travel, transport equipment, and preparing site inspection reports.
