Job Description and Duties

Assists with fish culture activities such as trapping, sorting and spawning male and female Chinook salmon, egg care and incubation, rearing of fry, fingerlings and smolts, feeding, grading, disease treatment, volitional and trucked fish releases, cleans screens, ponds, troughs and incubators.

Assists with maintenance of vehicles, equipment, buildings and grounds. Assists with maintaining positive and professional appearance of entire facility and residences. Drives and operates trucks, forklift, lawnmower, weed-eaters, mechanical equipment and power tools.

Assists with biological studies such as CWT program, fish health assessment, and feed studies. Assists with bio-security and aquatic invasive species monitoring and prevention protocols. Assists with water quality monitoring and sampling. Maintains simple records.

Personal Leave Program: Effective July 1, 2025, state employees are subject to temporary salary reductions ranging from 2% to 4.62% in exchange for Personal Leave Program (PLP) hours. Please note that the salary ranges listed in this Job Control may not reflect these reductions associated with the 2025 Personal Leave Program.

The Fish and Wildlife Seasonal Aid classification is a non-testing classification.

• Applicants who receive public assistance under the CalWORKs program shall be given hiring priority consideration as provided in Government Code, Section 19063.

• Applicants who receive public assistance need to identify themselves as CalWORKs recipients in the comments section of the STD 678, Examination/Employment Application.

• Applicants must submit verification of CalWORKs eligibility, which may include the most recent Notice of Action showing Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) eligibility or a copy of the most recent aid check stub.

• Applicants may obtain verification from the CalWORKs program. If CalWORKs verification is not submitted with the application, it will not be processed as CalWORKs eligible.

• Participation by a public assistance recipient is voluntary and in no event shall any person be subject to sanctions, through loss of benefits or eligibility, for not applying for, accepting, or continuing in a seasonal or entry level non-testing classification opening.

Working Conditions

Hatchery work is conducted mostly outdoors daily. Work will be conducted outdoors, in the spawning building and in the hatchery building.

Special Requirements

During spawning employee will be required to lift and carry adult king salmon, lift and carry 45 pound buckets of fish or eggs and lift and carry 44 pound bags of fish feed.

This position requires possession of a valid Driver's License. The selected candidate will be required to provide a photocopy (front and back) of the license: Name as stated on the license, issuing state, DL #, Class, expiration.

Desirable Qualifications

Good driving record; additional course work or experience in biological or chemical sciences; interest in and knowledge of fishing, hunting or studying fish, wildlife, invertebrates or plants; experience in camping, boating, and maintaining or repairing equipment; interest in a career in biology or fish and wildlife.

Special Personal Characteristics: Demonstrated knowledge of, interest in, and aptitude for fish and wildlife conservation and repair and maintenance work; willingness to live and work throughout the State; willingness to work unusual hours and on Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays; willigness to perform varied manual tasks; willingness to work in adverse weather conditions; willingness to wear a prescribed uniform.

Special Physical Characteristics: Physical strength and agility; ability to lift 40 pounds; ability to swim 50 yards and stay afloat at least five (5) minutes.

Additional Desirable Qualifications: Good driving record and education equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade.
