AI and the Hiring Process
We recognize that Artificial Intelligence (AI) is becoming part of daily life and can be a valuable tool for learning, research, and professional growth. We encourage candidates to use AI responsibly as a support in preparing application materials, live assessments, and interviews. However, we value authenticity, accuracy and truthfulness. Application responses and interview answers must reflect your own knowledge, skills, and experiences. While AI can supplement preparation, it cannot replace the originality and judgment we look for in our employees. This ensures fairness, transparency, and equity for all applicants in the hiring process.

A Statement of Qualifications (SOQ) is required and must be submitted with your application. The SOQ must be no more than four pages, typed in Arial 12-point font with one-inch margins. Responses must be numbered and address each question separately. Provide specific examples that demonstrate your experience, responsibilities, and outcomes.

Questions 1-4 will be evaluated and scored based on the established criteria, for a maximum of 100 points. Question 5 is required but will not be scored and is intended to provide additional insight into the applicant's interest in the position and professional background.

1. Leadership and Supervision: Describe your experience managing or supervising a team within a California state department. Include the classifications and number of employees supervised, programs overseen, and your approach to managing workload, employee performance, and staff development.
2. State Personnel Administration: Describe your knowledge and experience administering California state civil service personnel programs, including recruitment and examinations, personnel transactions, and applicable State Personnel Board (SPB) and California Department of Human Resources (CalHR) rules and regulations.
3. Classification and Pay: Describe your experience applying California state classification and pay principles, including position allocation, classification analysis, salary determinations, and resolving complex classification or compensation issues. Provide a specific example.
4. Labor and Employee Relations: Describe your experience interpreting and applying collective bargaining agreements and advising management on employee relations matters, including grievances, progressive discipline, adverse actions, or other complex personnel issues. Provide a specific example demonstrating your role and the outcome.
5. Interest in the Position and Qualifications (Not Scored): What interests you about serving as the Human Resources Director/EEO Officer for the California Science Center, and what skills, experience, and professional strengths do you believe would contribute to your success in the position?

A resume or cover letter will not be accepted in lieu of the SOQ. Failure to submit the required SOQ or follow the instructions may result in disqualification from consideration.
