Department Information

The Nutrition Education and Obesity Prevention Branch (NEOPB) is an organization dedicated to improving the health status of millions of low-income California parents and children, with the goal of preventing obesity and other diet related chronic diseases. This statewide public health program leads a statewide movement of local, state, and national partners in which multiple venues are used to facilitate behavior change in homes, schools, worksites, and communities to create environments that support fruit and vegetable consumption and physical activity.

Job Description and Duties

Under the general direction of the Health Program Manager (HPM) l, Chief, Training Development and Support Unit, the Health Program Specialist (HPS) I is responsible for a full range of advanced technical and administrative services related to the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of statewide training programs, initiatives, and policy developments. Develops and revises trainings that support areas such as environmental support for obesity prevention, physical activity, nutrition education, and community/youth/partner engagement; develop and revise content areas such as food security/hunger prevention, retail/agriculture, worksite/employee wellness, early childhood education, and school and afterschool. The HPS I is a highly skilled, technical program consultant in the areas of extreme sensitivity such as public health interventions aimed at target populations most at risk for obesity and strategies for transfering these skills to direct service providers. The HPS I works collaboratively to coordinate and support implementation of program policies amongst Nutrition Education and Obesity Prevention Branch (NEOPB) funded projects. Travel is an essential function of this position and is required up to 35 percent of the time.

Knowledge of and experience with utilizing leadership skills and project management techniques to oversee, develop and implement complex projects while successfully collaborating with various external and internal stakeholders.

Knowledge of and experience with strategic planning, facilitating group discussions, and leading teams on various high-priority projects.

Knowledge of and experience with developing and implementing competency-based, learner-centered training programs.

Possesses strong written and verbal communication skills.

Demonstrated ability to adapt to changing priorities and direction.

Knowledge of and experience using MicroSoft Office Suite, webinar, survey, and SharePoint applications.
