Job Description and Duties

Department of Health Care Services (DHCS) is comprised of a diverse team dedicated to preserving and improving the overall health and well-being of all Californians, and the Department's mission is to provide the most vulnerable residents with access to affordable, integrated, high-quality health care.

The Nurse Evaluator (NE) II will be responsible for the statewide authorization of services, eligibility determination, and Intake processing for the Integrated Systems of Care Division (ISCD). The NE II will be a member of a multidisciplinary team working to meet the goals of the ISCD. The NE II will perform and coordinate nursing/medical necessity, medical care needs, decisions and authorizations for the Medi-Cal services under ISCD’s programs, which may include but not limited to, the California Children’s Services and the Genetically Handicapped Persons Program.

Training and Development assignments may be considered based on the availability of eligible candidates and are subject to approval by the Hiring Authority prior to appointment. Training and Development assignments are considered limited term, 12 months, and may be extended up to 24 months or become permanent.

Working Conditions

DHCS has embraced a hybrid work environment. Regular or recurring telework may occur as part of the incumbent’s ongoing regular schedule per DHCS's Telework Policy, in accordance with Government Code Sections 14200-14203. This position is eligible to telework 100% of the time with the exception of any statewide, work-related travel as indicated in the duty statement.

Department Information

The ISCD oversees programs and Medicaid waivers that are focused on meeting the needs of infants, children, youth, adults, and older adults with chronic illnesses or numerous health conditions. Approximately one million Californians are covered under these programs. Additionally, ISCD oversees numerous specialty services for distinct populations, including California Children’s Services, Genetically Handicapped Persons Program, and Program of All Inclusive Care for the Elderly. ISCD’s role includes direct oversight of programs, as well as working within DHCS and with other departments across California in the administration, implementation, oversight, and monitoring of health care programs.

Benefits

Nurses are entitled to thirty-two hours of paid education leave (during a two-year licensure period) for the purpose of earning the Continuing Education Units required for license renewal.
