Job Description and Duties

This position focuses on the surveillance, identification and care of wildlife impacted by flooding in the Tulare Lake basin, in the souther San Joaquin Valley. Daily activities include, airboat surveillance, intake of sick waterfowl, wading and shorebirds and care of sick birds. Removal and disposal of dead birds will be necessary as disease outbreaks occur. This position will be the lead and responsible for the daily operation of the "Duck Hospital", which may include coordination with volunteers, Federal Staff and State employees. The Fish and Wildlife Technician will work closely with the Senior Environmental Scientist Supervisor overseeing the project to provide continuity between scientific aids and staff from other programs and Regions as they are assigned to assist.

In order to be eligible for this position, you must either be transfer eligible or take and pass the following exam:

This position is a 12-month Limited Term (LT) and may be extended up to 24 months or become permanent.

If you currently have permanent status in your position and have passed probation, you have mandatory reinstatement rights into your former position at the end of this LT appointment. If you have not had prior permanent or probationary civil service status, you will be separated from state service.

Working Conditions

Ability to work long, irregular hours, including early mornings, evenings, and weekends. Ability to work on a boat for up to 8 hours continuously. Ability to lift up to 40 lbs. Willingness to wear appropriate PPE. Interact with regional staff, and members of the public via e-mail, telephone, and in person. Attend occasional meetings. Field activities may involve strenuous physical labor in variable weather conditions ranging from below freezing to 110+ degrees. Possession of valid driver license required. Ability to drive up to 8 hours. Wearing a uniform while working in public is required. NOTE: Frequent weekend and holiday work may be required.

Special Requirements

  • Experience handling a variety of bird species.
  • Ability to administer treatments in the care of sick wildlife, including intravenous fluids, nasal irrigation and injections.
  • Ability to manage the intake and of sick birds, potentially in the thousands.
  • Boater Safety Card is required.

Statement of Qualifications.

Statement of Qualifications must be no more than two pages in length, size 12pt Arial font.

  • State your experience administering treatments or medication to wildlife, domestic animals or livestock.
