Job Description and Duties

Under the direction of the Special Agent-In-Charge (SAC), Office of Correctional Safety (OCS), the Senior Special Agent, Fugitive Apprehension Team (FAT), is responsible for the management and supervision of the activities of an OCS field office.  The incumbent provides supervision and training to staff, coordinating and monitoring their conduct of investigations, arrests, and warrant service involving California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) inmates, wards, escapees, parolees, parolees at large (PALs), and employees.  The incumbent performs a variety of duties associated with the investigation, location, and apprehension of PALs, escapees, and other fugitives; personally conducts the most difficult and complex investigations; and is responsible for establishing and maintaining liaison with other law enforcement agencies.


Will also consider Temporary Appointments (TA) - Candidates who meet the minimum qualifications for the classification, but do not currently have eligibility on an employment certification list by having taken and passed an examination, may apply as a TA.  TAs are limited to a duration of 9 months within a 12 consecutive month period. In order for a TA to become permanent, individuals must take and pass the related examination, and thereby become eligible from a certification list, within 9 months of TA. Individuals who successfully obtain eligibility prior to the expiration of the TA will not be required to re-compete in a competitive process for permanent appointment to that position.

The Office of Correctional Safety (OCS) supports the mission of the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation. The OCS mission is to protect the public and serve the CDCR investigative and security interests.

• The Special Service Unit (SSU) conducts the major criminal investigations and prosecutions, criminal apprehension efforts of prison escapees and parolees.

• The Fugitive Apprehension Teams (FAT) conduct field arrest operations of high-risk parolee violators/absconders.

• The Emergency Operations Unit (EOU) oversees special departmental operations such as special transports; hostage rescue; riot suppression and firearms.

• The Emergency Planning and Management Unit (EPMU) overseas all departmental emergency planning, preparedness, response and recovery needs.

• The Criminal Intelligence Analysis Unit (CIAU) identifies and conducts trend and link analyses between criminal suspects and criminal enterprise organizations operating within California’s correctional systems.

• The Juvenile Gang Operations Unit (JGO) is responsible for oversight of juvenile gang management issues.

Per Department Operations Manual §32010.19.6, specialized units such as OCS may establish a quarterly proficiency course of fire and techniques that meet their specific needs.  OCS has established a specialized course of fire and applicable staff assigned to OCS are required to pass this quarterly course of fire with primary and other assigned firearms in order to maintain their assignment to OCS

Candidates new to CDCR or the Division of Juvenile Justice are required to submit to a background investigation process utilizing Live Scan fingerprinting and Tuberculosis testing prior to appointment followed by department annual Tuberculosis testing/evaluation  thereafter.

SROA and Surplus candidates are given priority; therefore, individuals with other eligibility may be considered in the event no SROA or Surplus candidates apply. Temporary Appointments may be considered if conditions warrant. Temporary Appointments may be made to anyone regardless of eligibility. Temporary Appointments may not exceed 9 months and will require eligibility to be obtained through an examination process in order to transition to a permanent appointment.
