Job Description and Duties

This position supports the California Department of Public Health’s (CDPH) mission and strategic plan by serving as the Assistant Deputy Director (ADD) for the Administration Division. The ADD provides expert advice to the Admin Deputy Director and is responsible for overseeing various operational functions across the division. The ADD makes recommendations to the Deputy Director on a wide variety of administrative and program-related topics and advises on potential impact(s) including, but not limited to funding, internal division operations, drills, technology, etc.  In addition, the ADD will represent the Deputy Director with the Department’s leadership, advisory groups, other federal, state and local government agencies, and stakeholders as needed. The ADD actively participates as a member of the Administration Division (Admin) senior leadership team and Admin Division management team, and acts in the absence of the Admin Deputy Director as necessary.

 

The incumbent works under the general direction of the Deputy Director of the Administration Division.

Department Information

The California Department of Public Health (CDPH) is dedicated to optimizing the health and well-being of the people in California.

Administration Division provides the accounting and budget, contracts, purchases, facilities, and operations support necessary to maintain a financially strong enterprise.

The Administration Division is located in in downtown Sacramento in the East End Complex across the street from the beautiful Capitol Park Rose Garden.

Special Requirements

STATEMENT OF QUALIFICATIONS (SOQ) INSTRUCTIONS:    

The Statement of Qualifications should be typed in 12-point font, single-spaced, on standard sized paper (8.5" x 11"), not to exceed two (2) pages in total. The Statement of Qualifications should be numbered in the same order listed below and should provide detailed examples and an overview of your experience specifically related to the desirable qualifications: 

  1. What is your experience with thinking strategically to identify areas for operational improvement, change management, and implementing effective solutions and operational processes?
  2. What is your experience with, and ability to, provide leadership in a fast paced, team-based, and collaborative environment that supports and promotes a diverse workforce? Provide examples of your previous work experience that demonstrate your ability to implement a successful succession plan, ensuring that vital information and experience is not lost when key staff leave or retire.
  3. What is your experience with, and ability to, partner with key stakeholders and work with all levels of staff and management to translate complex financial accounting, budgets, contracts, and procurement related issues to customers who are not familiar with those processes?
  4. This position requires that you have a cross-functional perspective and the ability to interact with every area within the Division and Department. Please provide examples of your previous work experience that demonstrates your ability to lead coordinated efforts with multiple departmental programs. Include details on how you have fostered a big-picture perspective with staff and stakeholders, and effectively communicated and implemented the details.
