Job Description and Duties

The incumbent works under the direction of the Health Program Manager (HPM) I, Chief of the Outreach and Communications Unit. The Health Program Specialist (HPS) I functions as a highly skilled, technical program consultant and plans, develops, coordinates, implements, and evaluates strategic planning components of the Maternal, Child and Adolescent Health (MCAH) Division. The HPS I serves in a key role in advising and assisting the HPM I on communication plans for complex health programs and health education outreach that support the Division’s mission and goals. The HPS I also serves as a liaison for stakeholder communication and interagency efforts to coordinate program activities across departments. This position requires the incumbent to function independently, communicate effectively, provide effective consultation/technical assistance and maintain/develop skills related to MCAH.

Travel (up to 5%) is required.

Candidates interested in this position are encouraged to take the California Department of Public Health’s (CDPH) Health Program Specialist I exam. Exams are administered bi-monthly.

Special Requirements

Writing Sample Instructions

Please provide three (3) writing samples that demonstrate your communications skills in developing outreach and education messaging, preferably for a health-related program or company.


Statement of Qualifications Instructions

Statement of Qualifications should be no more than two (2) pages in length using 12-point font and addressing the questions below.

1.  Please share your education, training, skills and experience developing public health education and outreach tools, including but not limited to social media, video, newsletters, talking points, fact sheets, press releases and web copy.

2.  Please share your experience developing key messages for diverse populations.

Resumes, letters, Supplemental Questionnaire, writing sample, transcripts, degrees, your state application, cover letters and other materials will not take the place of the Statement of Qualifications.
