Job Description and Duties

The California Department of Fish and Wildlife's Conservation Engineering Branch provides technical expertise in the fields of fish passage, hydraulic  engineering, hydrology, engineering geology, hydrogeology, and fluvial geomorphology to meet the needs of the Department's programs and Regional responsibilities on a statewide basis.  Accordingly, we are currently recruiting for an energetic and self-motivated Senior Hydraulic Engineer to provide fisheries and hydraulic engineering expertise that support the planning, design, and construction of stream crossing and wetlands design projects being implemented by the California Department of Transportation. Refer to the duty statement for more detail of responsibilities and functions. This new position is one of CDFW's Headquarters Engineering Liaisons to Caltrans and will provide enhanced engineering services for Caltrans projects ensuring protection and enhancement of fish and wildlife resources.
 
The incumbent will successfully work with an interdisciplinary team of engineers, geologists, fluvial geomorphologists, ecologists, biologists and other environmental scientists.
 
 *This is a 12 month Limited-Term position that may be extended up to 24 months with the possibility of becoming permanent.  
 
Please note for recruitment purposes, the California Department of Fish and Wildlife will also consider using the Senior Transportation Engineer, Caltrans and Senior Engineer Water Resources eligible lists as an appropriate to the Senior Hydraulic Engineer classification pending successful selection of the candidate.

Working Conditions

Duties consist of office activities and some field work. Travel will be required for meetings and field work. During project construction, incumbent may need to stay at or near the project site for an extended period. Must be able to work unusual and/or long hours on occasion; occasional attendance at evening public meetings; spend multiple days in the field assessing environmental conditions in adverse weather or terrain; wading in streams and rivers; hiking over rough terrain with no vehicle access. Office is located in West Sacramento.

Able to use creative thinking to solve problems and develop mutually agreeable solutions. Ability to make sound decisions based on policies, guidance, and regulations. Ability to work well on an interdisciplinary team with multiple stakeholders.
Possession of an understanding of techniques and methodologies related to collecting, organizing, compiling, reporting and disseminating hydrological, hydraulic and other environmental data. To fulfill the duties of this position, the incumbent is required to have strong written and oral communication skills and organization skills. Tact and leadership.
