Under direction of the Infrastructure Orchestration (IO) Information Technology Manager I (IT Mgr I), the Information Technology Specialist (IT Spec I) is responsible for working with service areas throughout the California Department of Technology (CDT) to reduce repetitive tasks by automating and orchestrating processes that ensure high availability, scaling, failure recovery, dependency management, and numerous other tasks and attributes into single processes that minimize staff effort.  The IT Spec I will use scripting and infrastructure technologies to manage interconnections and interactions among workloads in private and public cloud infrastructure.

Working Conditions

  • May be required to work weekends and off shift work since this position supports a work environment that functions 24 hours a day, 7 days a week
  • May be required to be available at any time, day or night, and on weekends and holidays and call-backs are probable
  • May be required to travel occasionally between CDT campuses/other State entities to perform assigned duties, attend meetings, attend training, and/or provide customer support
  • May be required to carry a mobile telephone and work remotely from home
  • Must maintain consistent, predictable attendance
  • Must pass a fingerprint background criminal record check completed by the Department of Justice (DOJ) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI)

STATEMENT OF QUALIFICATIONS (SOQ)

Instructions:

You must answer the question in its entirety and follow all instructions for answering the question in the specific order to be considered for the position.Your response to the SOQ should be no more than two (2) pages in length, formatted with a font of 12pt Arial, and margins on the top, bottom and sides of the pages of no less than ¾ of an inch. The page should include your name with “Statement of Qualifications” appearing below it in the page header, and the header contents centered.  Each candidate’s Statement of Qualifications must clearly identify experience in the categories listed below and be in the following order:

Cover Letter or Resume cannot be used to substitute SOQ.  Applications without a SOQ may not be considered.  The SOQ should address the following:

  1. Please describe in detail you experience with automation tools and scripting. Please include the tools, scripting languages, and projects these were used for.
  2. Please describe in detail your experience with Cloud Services. Please include in your answer, what CSP’s, and CSP services you have experience with.
  3. Please describe in detail your experience with server administration and/or networking.

Desirable Qualifications

In addition to evaluating each candidate's relative ability, as demonstrated by quality and breadth of experience, the following factors will provide the basis for competitively evaluating each candidate:
  • Broad knowledge of data center, virtualization, and cloud technologies & associated best practices
  • Experience working with Virtualization technologies and architectures, based on VMWare ESXi, Microsoft Hyper-V  & KVM
  • Some coding skills in Python or similar (Perl, Java, etc.), with emphasis on writing modular, scalable code
  • Familiarity with API web service design
  • Unix skills - Encompassing shell scripting, Perl, Puppet
  • Excellent verbal communication, analytical skill and critical thinking
