Under the direction of the Deputy Chief of Consultation Services, Process Safety Management and Engineering Services with the Department of Industrial Relations (DIR), Division of Occupational and Safety Health (DOSH or Cal/OSHA), the Principal Safety Engineer (Elevator) has full supervisory and oversight responsibility of the Cal/OSHA Elevator Unit and local DIR-DOSH Elevator District Offices. The Principal Safety Engineer implements and participates in the development of the overall Division policies relating to matters involving safety engineering, inspection, and permitting of elevators and other conveyances. The Principal Safety Engineer supervises, plans, schedules, directs, assigns, evaluates, and reviews the work of staff [Office Support (e.g. OA, and/or OT), Management Services Technicians, Staff Services Analysts, Associate Safety Engineers (Elevators)] through subordinate supervisors, Senior Safety Engineers (Elevators), engaged in the administration and implementation of the Cal/OSHA Elevator Unit’s work. The Principal Safety Engineer is responsible for the training, upward mobility, and maintaining of discipline of employees under their supervision. The Principal Safety Engineer ensures that the Elevator Unit District Offices function and operate daily in accordance with DIR-DOSH directives, rules, policy and procedures and that staff promotes the DIR-DOSH Mission, Vision, Values, and Goals. The Principal Safety Engineer sets priorities, evaluates performance of all staff and travels throughout the State.

Will also consider Temporary Authorization Utilization (TAU) appointments - Candidates that meet the minimum qualifications for the classification but do not currently have eligibility on an employment certification list by having taken and passed an examination may apply as a TAU. TAU appointments are limited to a duration of 9 months within a 12 consecutive month period. In order for a TAU appointment to become permanent, individuals must take and pass the related examination, and thereby become eligible from a certification list, within 9 months of TAU appointment. Individuals who successfully obtain eligibility prior to the expiration of the TAU appointment will not be required to re-compete in a competitive process for permanent appointment to that position.

Primarily working in an office that requires prolonged sitting using a personal computer and frequently responding to telephone and email inquiries.
May also conduct field work which would consist of ascending/descending elevator shafts; accessing elevator car tops, machine rooms, elevator pits, and machinery spaces around elevators, escalators, and other conveyances; standing, crouching, reaching, and transporting up to 25 lbs. of work equipment or materials.
Traveling via private, State vehicle, or public transportation (e.g., automobile, airplane, etc.) including occasional overnight travel.
