Job Description and Duties

Per CCR 249.3, this job control may be used to fill subsequent vacancies.

  • Participate in the establishment and administration of programs that mitigate disease and other animal health threats that impact multiple species with a focus on domestic-wildlife interface.

  • Drive and travel as needed to participate in interagency meetings and work groups, traveling as needed, to coordinate with partner agencies such as (but not limited to) other CDFA programs and Divisions; United States Department of Agriculture (USDA): Veterinary Services and Wildlife Services; California Department of Public Health; California Department of Fish and Wildlife; California Environmental Protection Agency; United States Center for Disease Control and Prevention; United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA); various agricultural programs and entities; various zoos; and institutes or schools within the University of California or California State University system.

  • Collaborate in the development of disease detection, evaluation and control with project goals and objectives.

  • Function as the AHB liaison to the AHFSS WDM program and provide veterinarian general knowledge and support for WDM program activities.

  • Maintain relationships, drive and travel as necessary, within CA Dept of Fish and Wildlife, USDA Wildlife Services (WS) and with county Agricultural Commissioners that have wildlife damage management programs independent of USDA WS or in cooperation with WS.

  • Drive and travel to attend meetings and represent CDFA as appropriate where WDM issues are discussed including CA Farm Bureau Federation, CA Cattlemen’s Association, Woolgrowers, etc.
  • Plan, organize, coordinate, and analyze animal health surveillance and disease mitigation activities

Working Conditions

The duties of this position are mostly conducted indoors, however incumbent may occasionally be required to work outside, under difficult conditions, and in non-standard office environments.

Travel (including nights, weekends, and holidays) for extended periods may be required for meetings and events as well as during an emergency response. Travel on short notice may be required upon activation for emergency response. During emergency response periods, duties may require working long shifts at hours other than the normal work hours.

The incumbent must follow CDFA, Division, and Branch employee health and safety policies.

Regular or recurring telework may occur as part of the incumbent’s ongoing regular schedule in accordance with CDFAs Telework Policy

Department Information

As part of the California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA) and the Animal Health and Food Safety Services (AHFSS) Division, The Animal Health Branch (AHB) functions as California’s organized, professional veterinary medical unit to protect public health, animal agriculture, and the economy from catastrophic animal diseases and other related health and agricultural problems. AHB addresses livestock diseases and issues that require statewide coordinated resources; implements programs that protect public health and animal agriculture; and ensures the availability, affordability, and wholesomeness of food.
