Job Description and Duties

Are you a librarian interested in applying and developing your skill sets and experience in the rapidly growing field of data librarianship? The California Research Bureau at the California State Library is seeking a mission-driven innovator who would like to help us identify and implement best practices for harvesting, organizing, and communicating the state’s most authoritative data to a California policymaking audience. You’ll work collaboratively with state researchers, data scientists, academics, and staff in the Legislature and Governor’s Office to help make large, complicated data sets more accessible, understandable, and useful to state policymakers and decisionmakers.


Under the supervision of the California Research Bureau Principal Librarian (Assistant Director), the incumbent is part of the team involved with a) the acquisition, organization and maintenance of data throughout its research life-cycle for CRB projects; b) facilitating the discovery, acquisition, and/or c) implementation of data science and public policy resources, knowledge, tools, skill sets and/or practices; researches and responds to a variety of Capitol client information and data requests including public-policy questions, legislative histories, fact-finding, and identifying experts; creates tools and resources for Capitol clientele to conduct their research; conducts trainings and presentations on the services and resources available to be tapped, and participates in the day-to-day operations of the Bureau including continuous improvement of services, procedures and programs.

Working Conditions

This position is headquartered in the City of Sacramento, however the position may work a hybrid schedule where you work remotely and physically report to the office as needed.

These bureaus ensure that the California State Library is the central reference and research library for state government and the Legislature and provides non-partisan research to the Legislature and the Governor.  The California State Library collects, preserves, generates and disseminates information ranging from California's priceless historical items to today's online texts, and it advises, consults with, and provides technical assistance to California's public libraries, all while directing state and federal funds to support local public libraries and statewide library programs, and services.

 

The State Library is home to public reading rooms including Information Services, Government Publications, the Law Library, the Braille and Talking Book Library, and the California History Room. It also plays host to Night at the State Library, annual community events like Juneteenth, the Archives Crawl, Museum Day and exhibits you won’t find anywhere else!

Desirable Qualifications
