Job Description and Duties

Travel Is Required. Position requires overnight travel, potentially up to four nights per week.

 

Under the supervision of a Correctional Sergeant in the Southern Transportation Hub, the Statewide Transportation Unit (STU) Correctional Officer will be responsible for the transportation of California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) inmates to and from various locations throughout California and other states as required. STU Officers must maintain a “Class B” Commercial Driver’s License, a Department of Motor Vehicles Medical Examiner’s Certificate (DL-51), Airbrake Endorsements, Passenger Endorsements, and First Aid/CPR Certificate. These positions also require quarterly qualification of all weapons and annual required training. STU Correctional Officers must be able to work at acceptable levels with little to no supervision. In addition, STU Correctional Officers must maintain all aspects and operate within accordance of the STU manual. STU Correctional Officers interact with the general public and other law enforcement agencies on a daily basis and are expected to present themselves at the highest professional standard at all times, on and off duty.

Masks must be worn in accordance with local requirements, the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) requirements, and directive (Required COVID-19 facial coverings for all institutional and facility staff) issued by CDCR.

Special Requirements

  • The position(s) require(s) a valid California Drivers License (CDL). You must answer the questions addressing your CDL on your application. Ensure you provide your CDL number, class, expiration date, and any endorsements and/or restrictions.

TWO YEAR APPRENTICESHIP AS A CORRECTIONAL OFFICER WITHIN A CDCR INSTITUTION MUST ALREADY BE COMPLETE. Candidates who have not completed the two year apprenticeship as a Correctional Officer will not be considered.

Prior to appointment, candidates will be required to obtain a Class B permit.  Upon appointment, candidates are required to obtain and maintain a Class B Commercial Driver’s License.  Also upon appointment, candidates are required to successfully complete .40 caliber semi-automatic handgun transitional training, Ruger Mini 14 course of fire, and Remington 870 shotgun course of fire.

Candidates new to CDCR or the Division of Juvenile Justice are required to submit to a background investigation process utilizing Live Scan Fingerprinting, and Tuberculosis testing prior to appointment followed by department annual Tuberculosis testing/evaluation thereafter.
