Job Description and Duties

FORESTRY AIDE (SEASONAL) – CENTRAL VALLEY DISTRICT / CALAVERAS BIG TREES STATE PARK

Priority consideration will be given to any person receiving State public assistance under the CalWORKS program.  Applicants who receive State public assistance need to identify their status as a CalWORKS recipient in the comments area on the application.  Applicants must submit a verification of their CalWORKS eligibility status, which may include the most recent Notice of Action showing TANF eligibility or a copy of your last aid check stub.  If verification is not submitted with the application, the application will not be processed. (Applicants may obtain verification from the CalWORKS program).

The reporting location for this position is Calaveras Big Trees State Park, 1170 CA-4, Arnold CA, 95223 positions will work under the supervision of the Forester II. 

 As a member of a forest stewardship crew the Forestry Aide will perform resource management tasks to include the use of tools and equipment to conduct manual fuel reduction, forestry, and prescribed fire operations. Forestry aides are responsible for basic chainsaw, fire tool, fire vehicle and equipment maintenance. This position may work weekends, nights, and overtime hours. The physical nature of this position necessitates the ability to perform a variety of forestry and natural resources manual labor tasks working outdoors on variable terrain, in inclement weather conditions and potentially smoky conditions related to prescribed fire operations. Stewardship crew members may be required to spike camp at work sites throughout the district and potentially parks throughout the State. Occasional travel may be required.

This position requires a valid Class C driver’s license. You must answer the questions addressing your driver’s license on your application. Ensure you provide your driver’s license number, class, expiration date, and any endorsements and/or restrictions on your application.

Per California Code of Regulations (CCR) 599.961, this is a sensitive position, and therefore subject to drug and alcohol testing. It should be noted that testing is not mandatory, but is allowed to be conducted only if and when there is a determination of reasonable suspicion as defined in CCR 599.962.

Working Conditions

Work Environment:

  • Work outdoors in variable weather conditions, forested environments, and variable terrain.
  • Work in hazardous situations (e.g., prescribed fire, tree cutting, forest debris, etc.).
  • Work environments may have exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, unpleasant odors, and/or loud noises.

Special Requirements

  • Must wear prescribed uniform and adhere to DPR grooming standards. Must not smoke or use tobacco/nicotine products in State buildings or vehicles.
  • Current Firefighter Type II certificate. Training will be provided to obtain a certificate if the applicant does not possess the certificate at time of hiring.
