Under direction of the Assistant Chief Psychologist of Diversion and Community Based Restoration Program (DCR), the Consulting Psychologist provides clinical and operational oversight of the assigned programs in the DCR continuum of care (e.g. County Felony Incompetent to Stand Trial Mental Health Diversion; Community Based Restoration programs; Community Inpatient Facilities). The candidate will collaborate with county partners in developing and supporting programming to serve Felony Incompetent to Stand Trial individuals in community settings. They will work with the Assistant Chief Psychologist in identifying and addressing programmatic issues and operational needs in order to effectively implement and support existing community programs and support the activation of new community programs, with the goal of expanding the continuum of care for Felony defendants with Incompetent to Stand Trial commitments. The Consulting Psychologist will serve as a clinical liaison between the DCR program, county behavioral health providers, county courts, and DSH’s Community Forensic Partnership Division.

Working Conditions

  • A majority of the essential functions of this position may be performed via telework and/or flexible scheduling in accordance with DSH PD 5338. Although the ability may be granted, incumbent must be available to report to in-person mandated trainings and essential meetings. 
  • Up to 20% statewide travel may be required.
  • This position is NOT eligible for Safety Retirement.

Department Information

The mission of the Department of State Hospitals is to provide evaluation and treatment in a safe and responsible manner, seeking innovation and excellence in hospital operations, across a continuum of care and settings.

This is a Sacramento-based position that may work remotely throughout California. Incumbent may be asked to go onsite to one of DSH's six locations if needed and with prior notice.

      In addition to evaluating each candidate's relative ability, as demonstrated by quality and breadth of experience, the following factors will provide the basis for competitively evaluating each candidate:
      • Experience working with justice involved individuals, in both inpatient and outpatient forensic service settings.
      • Experience working with Interdisciplinary Teams serving individuals diagnosed with Severe Mental Illness (SMI)
      • Experience conducting forensic evaluations in inpatient or outpatient settings, such as Competency Evaluations, Violence Risk Assessments, Diversion Assessments, Involuntary Community Treatment (i.e. Assisted Outpatient Treatment).
      • Experience conducting oversight of behavioral health programs.
      • Experience providing consultation and collaborating with behavioral health and justice partners.
      • Knowledge of state and community systems of care for justice involved individuals with Severe Mental Illness (SMI).
      • Knowledge of CA statutes related to Competency to Stand Trial and Mental Health Diversion
      • Knowledge of Mental Health Diversion Programs
