Duties: Actual assigned duties will be assigned commensurate with the selected candidate's skill level. Under the direction of the Senior Land Surveyor, the incumbent will perform professional-level work of moderate complexity. This includes determining property boundaries, preparing deeds and maps, and utilizing computer-aided design and mapping (CAD/CAM) systems for calculations and map production. The incumbent will maintain accurate title records, reports, vesting documents, and other related documentation. Experience with Geographic Information Systems (GIS), specifically ESRI products, is beneficial for mapping and coordination with other staff.

Special Requirements

Candidates must possess a valid California driver's license when conducting State business that requires driving a vehicle, be able to travel around the state for a week at a time and be able to carry 50 lbs. across a distance on steep and uneven terrain.  Candidates must meet the minimum qualifications for a Transportation Surveyor (Caltrans) and produce evidence of minimum qualifications before being considered eligible for appointment.

Candidates will be evaluated based on the quality and extent of their experience. Therefore, applications and resumes should clearly and concisely demonstrate relevant qualifications. Ideal candidates will possess a combination of the following: proficiency in computer-aided design and mapping (CAD/CAM) systems for calculations and map production; experience preparing legal descriptions and deeds, and conducting research and analysis of ownership records, title reports, recorded maps, survey notes, and vesting documents for boundary determination; experience with ArcGIS (ArcMap and ArcPro) and related GIS tools for database maintenance and exhibit creation; strong written and verbal communication skills; a detail-oriented approach with a focus on quality; the ability to manage multiple tasks and projects concurrently; strong organizational skills; a commitment to meeting deadlines and managing budgets effectively; dependability; and proficiency in spreadsheet software, surveying software, Microsoft Office 365, and related applications, with a demonstrated aptitude for learning new software.

 

Possession of a valid certificate as a Land Surveyor in Training issued by the California Board for Professional Engineers, Land Surveyors, and Geologist or possession of a valid certificate as an Engineer in Training issued by the California Board for Professional Engineers, Land Surveyors, and Geologist in lieu of a certificate as a Land Surveyor in Training may be substituted for the required education.

 

Possession of a California Land Surveyors License issued by the California Board for Professional Engineers, Land Surveyors, and Geologist is preferred, but not required.

 

Range D of this classification requires possession of a valid California Land Surveyors License issued by the California Board for Professional Engineers, Land Surveyors, and Geologists.
