Job Description and Duties

Analyst iII – Tribal Stewardship program analyst / Tribal Affairs / California Natural Resources Agency  


This position is a 12-month Limited-Term position that may be extended and/or become permanent. 

The reporting location for this position is Sacramento, CA. This position will work under the general direction of the Deputy Director for Tribal Affairs.

The California Natural Resources Agency (CNRA) is hiring a limited term Analyst III to serve as Tribal Stewardship Program Analyst to develop resources to support short and long term tribal stewardship of conserved lands across California. This position will support the CNRA in developing a recommendation report for innovative policies, programs, and procedures to support tribal stewardship pursuant to Public Resources Code Section 71453 (AB 900, Papan 2025), CNRA’s Tribal Stewardship Policy, and the goal to conserve 30% of California’s lands and coastal waters by 2030 (30x30).

 

This position will help estimate the backlog and future stewardship needs of tribes in California, review stewardship best practices for tribal conserved lands for improved outcomes and cost-effective measures, research and support building out tribal ecological workforce needs for tribal stewardship, review co-benefits of tribal stewardships, develop innovative ways to support ancestral land return, and increase consultations and partnership with California Native American tribes, support tribal stewardship, including access and collaboration.

Applicants must have strong research and writing experience, tribal affairs background, working knowledge of California Native American tribal issues in California, experience working on projects and/or research related to access, collaboration, co-management, ancestral land return, and restoration and conservation work. Excellent written and verbal communication skills and the ability to work in a fast-paced environment and prioritize tasks.

Working Conditions

Work Schedule:

This position is categorized as Office-Centered. The position’s job duties are performed at their designated work location 50% or more of the time within a work month. The position incumbent can telework with a management approved telework agreement and schedule. Satisfactory job performance is required to maintain a teleworking agreement.

The Tribal Stewardship Program Analyst will be required to work from the office in Sacramento a minimum of four days a week.

  • Have a working knowledge of the complexities of property acquisitions and ancestral land return.
  • Have strong research and writing skills and the ability to clearly communicate in plain language complex topics.
  • Ability to prepare, support, and lead public recorded webinars and in-person events and meetings.
  • Ability to collaborate with other state departments, the federal government, local governments, philanthropy, and non-tribal for profit and non-profit entities.
