Job Description and Duties

Under the direction of the Chief Counsel, the Attorney performs progressively more difficult legal work, provides professional legal counsel and representation to the State Lands Commission (Commission), and coordinates with non-legal staff to produce legally sound approaches, negotiating strategies, and work products. This position will be focused on regulatory rulemaking and working in conjunction with our legislative liaison to update the Commission's authorities.

Working Conditions

  • Core business hours of 9am to 3pm.
  • Sit, bend, stoop, or stand while working. 
  • Daily use of standard office equipment.
  • Temperature controlled office with artificial light.
  • Transport items weighing up to 25 pounds.
  • Appropriate business attire required.
  • Occasional overnight travel.
  • Occasional mandatory overtime. 
  • An attorney is expected to normally average 40 hours of work per week including paid leave, however, work weeks of a longer duration may occasionally be necessary.
  • On occasion, work will be required outside of regular business hours and require overnight or multi-night travel to off-site locations anywhere within or outside the state that may require the use of various transportation modes (airplane, taxi, car, boat, etc.)

General Qualifications:
Ability to adhere to the general qualifications outlined in California Code of Regulations 2 CCR 172.

School Transcripts:
Application packages must include a copy of official transcripts for the universities/colleges attended where the required coursework was received. Failure to provide official transcripts may result in removal from the exam list. Applicants providing copies of international official transcripts may need to provide an evaluation/translation from an educational credentials evaluation service (Foreign Transcript Evaluation [CL-635]) to ensure that all the required coursework can be verified by the hiring agency.

Bar License Requirement: Candidates must identify their Bar License Number on their STD 678 State Application.

Describe your experience working with a multidisciplinary team or on a case or project in which you had to incorporate, review, or interpret scientific or technical material. Examples include CEQA documents, engineering reports, or scientific papers.
