Job Description and Duties

The Senior Toxicologist serves as the Chief of the Pesticide Exposure Evaluation and Medical Education Section (PEEMES) of the Pesticide and Environmental Toxicology Branch (PETB). PEEMES has responsibilities in pesticide related health evaluations and agricultural worker health and safety evaluations, regulations and education. PEEMES also provides technical assistance to other programs in the Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment (OEHHA), the Department of Pesticide Regulation, and other California government entities.

The Senior Toxicologist supervises the activities of the personnel in PEEMES and provides expert scientific and management supervision of Section projects by coordinating, as appropriate, with the Chief of PETB, and other programs within OEHHA. Duties include the direct supervision of Section staff, granting time off, and coordinating various projects involving other parts of the office. The incumbent will review the work of staff and will be responsible for the most sensitive and/or complex documents prepared by the Section.

Working Conditions

OEHHA has a hybrid work environment that includes work in an office setting in a high-rise building and telework at home. Requires extended periods of reading and writing, frequently using computer workstations, and data and word processing software. Work in office space may not have direct natural lighting. Day trips and overnight travel may be required to attend meetings, public hearings, and/or to work with other governmental entities to complete projects and work assignments. May be required to travel to other locations for business related needs as necessary.

This position may be located either at 1515 Clay Street, 16th Floor, Oakland, or at 1001 I Street, 12th Floor, Sacramento, California.

Statement of Qualifications

The Statement of Qualifications (SOQ) serves as documentation of your ability to present information clearly and concisely in writing. The SOQ is a narrative discussion, not a bulleted summary. Please answer each of the following questions for the SOQ. Identify each response with the number of the SOQ question, single-spaced, and using Arial 12-point font. The SOQ should be no more than three (3) pages in length.

1. Describe how your education, experience, and other skills qualify you to effectively direct a multidisciplinary team of scientists to conduct scientifically rigorous, accurate, and complete evaluations and analyses of pesticide exposure assessments or worker health and safety evaluations.
2. Discuss your role and contributions to a project that involved the evaluation and analysis of a complex set of pesticide exposure issues and data related to assessing risks to occupational or residential bystanders. Include a brief description of the methods applied, the analyses conducted, and the key outcomes of the project.
3. Describe your experience giving oral presentations on issues related to pesticide exposure or health education at scientific conferences, meetings of expert panels, or other public meetings.
